Will X-Men: Days Of Future Past Bring Back The Hellfire Club?

At the end of Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class we watch what looks like the birth of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Mutants. The final scene of the film sees the brilliant, evil mastermind, played by Michael Fassbender, break into a CIA holding cell along with Riptide (Álex González), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Angel (Zoe Kravitz), Azazel (Jason Flemyng), and break-out Emma Frost (January Jones). But as the Brotherhood grows in the X-Men movie universe, it appears that it’s making the previously established Hellfire Club disappear.

The Coventry Telegraph has learned from studio sources that X-Men: Days of Future Past, the upcoming Bryan Singer-directed sequel to First Class, will not feature the 1960s underground mutant club led by Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon). While the reasons for this should be pretty clear to those who saw the last movie and watched the group’s leader die after getting a coin through the head, its implications remain unknown. As of now the only confirmed cast members from First Class, good or evil, include Fassbender, Lawrence, James McAvoy and Nicholas Hoult, but what does that mean for the Hellfire members?

If the characters don’t end up returning, it won’t be a surprise to the actors involved. Last week Flemyng told the Irish Independent, “I don’t think I will be back. Initially I was gutted, but then, I remembered I had to get up at two in the morning, I had to be painted red and be slightly out of focus and posed a lot, and that was sort of it. Now I don’t have to do that.” Similarly back in January, Jones was also quoted saying that she wouldn’t likely be back and that nobody had reached out to her about the sequel. We still don’t know what’s going on with Gonzalez or Kravitz - or Caleb Landry Jones or Lucas Till for that matter - but anything could change between now and the start of production. For now, though, it seems as though only a few mutants will be coming back for part two.

This news comes right on the heels of a new casting report last week from Singer himself, who revealed that Daniel Cudmore will be back to play Colossus in X-Men: Future Past and that new additions BooBoo Stewart and Fan Bing Bing have also signed on for mystery roles. He revealed the new actors’ involvement by posting headshots of his entire cast, seemingly specifically leaving six spots blank:

If those empty spots are indeed being saved for actors who haven’t signed on yet, who would you like to see get their image up on the wall? Would you rather see a returning face, similar to Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Shawn Ashmore, Ellen Page, Halle Berry and Anna Paquin, who have all signed on for the sequel? Or would you rather see them bringing in new stars, like they have with Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Stewart and Bing Bing? (X)

X-Men: Days Of Future Past Will Be Set 11 Years After First Class

One of the most fascinating things about Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class is its setting. While all of the previous movies in the franchise have taken place in modern day, the “prequel” brought audiences back to a time the Kennedy presidency and Cold War paranoia, highlighted by and end sequence that served as an awesome riff on the real life Cuban Missile Crisis.

But while we’ve heard all kinds of details about the upcoming sequel, Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, including the fact that Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Anna Paquin, Shawn Ashmore and Ellen Page will all be reprising their roles from the original trilogy, one detail that has evaded us has been the year that the bulk of the story would be taking place. Today it seems that date has been revealed.

Comic Book Movie has picked up on a Twitter post from user @tvchiquita that has a casting call for the new film that seems to reveal what year most of X-Men: Days of Future Past will be taking place, and the answer is (drumroll please) 1973 - about ten years after the events of the first movie. The sequel appears to be going under the name “HK Productions” and looks to start costume fittings for background performers in the middle of next month up in Montreal. But what does it mean? Will Singer and his crew be focusing on another major historical event like they did in the first movie, or will it be operating separately? Could the ten year gap explain why January Jones may not be coming back as Emma Frost?

X-Men: Days of Future Past is ‘X-Men meets Terminator’ says Mark Millar

And, quite frankly, it sounds incredible.

“Vaughn is going for a big sci-fi style thing with X-Men: Days of Future Past,” Millar said.

“It’s X-Men meets The Terminator,” he continued.

“You’ve got robots, you’ve got time travel, you’ve got superheroes - it’s got everything in one film.”

Which sounds to us like the iconic giant robot Sentinels will definitely be appearing in the movie.

Which almost certainly means a bigger budget will be needed. Thankfully, Millar thinks that won’t be a problem.

“Cost-wise it’s going to go up, and ambitious-wise it’s gone up,” Millar said. “But Vaughn can handle it. Vaughn made Kick-Ass for $28 million.”

‘X-Men: First Class’ Sequel Adapting Awesomely Apocalyptic Time Travel Tale

One of the most enduring and well-liked storylines from Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s legendary run on the “Uncanny X-Men” comic book was known as ‘Days of Future Past.’ It introduced readers to a post-apocalyptic future (hilariously, 2013) where the Earth is controlled by giant robots, mutants are all either killed or locked up in internment camps, and only a small handful of rebels remain. These rebels, determining that all of this badness started with the assassination of Senator Robert Kelly by the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and his subsequent martyring by anti-mutant forces, send an older version of Kitty Pryde back to the present to warn the X-Men that they must stop the assassination at all costs. Basically, the story is a cross between Back to the Future and The Terminator, with super-powered mutants, and it’s one of the front-runners for coolest thing ever.

So it’s super exciting to hear that Matthew Vaughn is apparently going to be using it as the inspiration for the sequel to his 2011 reboot of the X-Men franchise, X-Men: First Class. Confirmation of this news came from an interview IGN conducted with producer Bryan Singer. When asked what he could reveal about the First Class sequel, Singer dropped a bombshell by saying, “It’s going to be very ambitious. It’s called Days of Future Past, and it deals with aspects of that comic but also some very new things… I just don’t want to give any of it away. Matthew Vaughn will be directing and I’m totally excited about it.”

‘X-Men: First Class’ Sequel Will Feature More Fassbender

The plan for the sequel — which he says “is unlike the other X-Men movies” — is to do some unexpected things with Xavier and Magneto. In February he told MTV, “Magneto becomes the villain ultimately of the franchise but he’s a much more complicated character as a young man. He’s someone you sympathize with, you care about, you root for even though you might not necessarily agree with his methods, you understand his philosophy.”

In the new movie, Magneto will have “a villainous side and he’ll have a sympathetic human side. You’ll be able to relate, but you’ll also be afraid of him.”

Kinberg has been working closely with director Matthew Vaughn and producer Jane Goldman on the script and they “hope to begin shooting in spring of next year to come out in July of 2014.”
